Sunlight and the smell of coffee break through the gaps in the wall and reach our room. I can see the dust dancing in the sunlight and imagine it as fairies. My sister is still asleep. It is clear enough to read so I grab my Bible and silently recite Psalm 91; it gives me peace for a new day. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
The sun rises as the last drops of coffee trickle from the old fabric filter. Dad has been in the kitchen since the early morning, and now he is preparing our lunch boxes: two guavas, a slice of bread and sausages for lunch, and a piece of carrot cake for the afternoon while we wait for him to come and take us home. He does not eat until we leave. He is a pervasive presence and we know his powerful voice from the services and long sermons in the chapel. At home, however, we rarely hear him even breathe. In the corridor or in their room he whispers to our mother, but never directly to us. She is everything to him. We stand next to the door with our bags. He blesses us with a nod and we walk up the pathway towards school.
The mornings can still be chilly in Pomerode in August. It is funny to imagine that when we arrived from Germany we used to laugh when we saw people overdressed for temperatures still far above zero. Now we do the same. We have been ‘acclimatised’, as they say.
Our house has become more comfortable as well. There was just a field and one bedroom when we arrived seven years ago, and around us just a few houses, not even a post office. Our bathroom and toilet used to be outside, which made us feel the winter on our skin on frosty mornings. There was only one small shop in the centre and an open market on Sunday mornings where we could buy clothes and shoes. Many things have changed since then. Now we have a cinema, our house has got an indoor toilet and we build a big kitchen where we can all gather together and spend most of the time.
